Pyle RFC 9 - 19 Pontycymer RFC

In form Pontycymer travelled to Brynglas for this Division Three West Central clash and it was the visitors late second half display that took the spoils.

Pyle started the stronger with outside half Joey Gallafant kicking 3 early penalties to put his side 9-0 up after 23 minutes and to the fore for the Brynglas outfit were centre Barry Grabham along with flankers Gareth Cox and Adam Ricketts. Pontycymers front row of former Bridgend raven Ricky Griffiths, Owen Whittingham and Darryl Lacey were in outstanding form at scrum time gaining the upper hand, while behind the scrum the Lawrence Park outfit handed a debut to ex-Neath and Aberavon centre Lloyd Jones who was in eye catching form breaking the Pyle defence time after time.

There were big first half displays for the Green and Ambers from all-action forward Dylan Phillips, outside half Ieuan Evans and pacey wing Tom Harris. When the sides took a well deserved breather it was the home side that took a 9-0 lead at the interval.

Pontycymer rang the changes and looked like a team on a mission in the second half with replacements, No.8 Rhys Hosey, flanker Jonny Evans and prop Dave Hayes all adding some venom to the Pontycymer pack and it was fitting that all three replacements would have such a huge impact on the result of this Division Three encounter. With 20 minutes left on the clock Pyle still had a 9-0 advantage but then replacement No.8 Rhys Hosey crashed over from a close range srummage making it game on at 9-5. The ever reliable boot of home pivot Joey Gallafant missed a penalty in front of the post and this put the Garw Valley side into overdrive and soon replacement flanker Jonny Evans bulldozed his way over the line to put Ponty in front for the first time in the match. Scrum half Geraint Gillet added the conversion making it 12-9 in favour of the Green and Ambers.

With one minute left to play powerhouse replacement prop Dave Hayes made sure of the points when he smashed his way over the try line from 12 metres out for the winning score and again Gillet added the extras which rounded off a great day at the office for Pontycymer with a fantastic smash and grab second half performance.

This Saturday Pontycymer welcome Bryncoch to Lawrence Park.

The draw was made this week for Round Three of this seasons Bowl and the Garw Valley outfit have been given an away trip to Cwrt-Y-Vil, on Saturday October 29th, where they face Old Penarthians with a 2:30pm kick-off.
