Bryncethin RFC 11 - 18 Pontycymer RFC

Bryncethin, who have a number of ex-Pontycymer players in their squad, still have never beaten their nemesis side but this time came close to recording their first ever win against the Garw Valley outfit but it was Pontycymer who took the spoils in this Division Three West Central encounter with a fantastic all round workman like team performance.

It was the home side that scored first with a penalty before Pontycymer outside half Nicky Harris made it honours even with a monster penalty making it 3-3. Bryncethin went further in front the with a contrieversal try also in the first half after a dust up between both sets of forwards and former Pontycymer captain and coach Dai Thomas, now playing for Byncethin, was given a red card for fighting along with Green and Ambers prop James Benbow who also took an early bath. The home side kicked another penalty and when the two sides stopped for a well deserved breather it was the Cherry and Whites who edged it 11-3.

The second half was all one way traffic with the Lawrence Park side in full control of the game. After a series of rucks and mauls Pontycymer full back Billy Bishop crossed for a top draw solo try and shortly after Pontycymer pivot Nicholas Harris leveled the scores with his second penalty of the match making it dead-locked at 11-11. Huge eye catching displays from the Garw Valley side came from lock Zack James, pacey wing Garin Hawkins, centres Nathan Silverthorne and burly Dave Upton, teenage scrum half Geraint Gillett and powerhouse No.8 Mike Harrington.

With five minutes left on the clock a missed penalty from the home side was picked up by Pontycymer who drove 80 metres up the field and with their powerful forwards in full control and from a driving lineout from the visitors who had been outstanding in the line-out all afternoon, claimed clean ball again and then the Pontycymer back division joined the driving line-out and all 15 players drove the plucky Bryncethin team over the try line, with all-action hooker Richard Harris claiming the match winning try with his brother Nicky added the extras to take yet another a well deserved resounding victory over Bryncethin.
