Pontycymer 10 - 5 Bryncethin

What a virtue patience is after narrow defeats in their opening two games of the season Pontycymer kick started their campaign with a roll-your-sleeves-up type display in this National Bowl Round 1 encounter.
Bryncethin travelled to the Garw Valley where they faced their nemesis side Pontycymer. The Cherry and Whites have traditionally struggled on their visits to Lawrence Park and this year was no different.
Sparkling home outside half Ieuan Evans was again the main architect pulling the strings in the number ten shirt and it was the Green and Ambers who broke the dead-lock with a early penalty from player/coach and scrum half Tom Davies. Pontycymer then hit a twenty minute purple patch, hammering at the Bryncethin try line but a strong defence from the visitors they were kept out. The home side were then forced to play the rest of the game with 14 men when a red card was issued by referee P.Mortimer (Pontypridd) for a punch. At the interval Pontycymer just edged it 3-0, with huge first half displays coming from skipper and flanker Andrew Harris, lock Rhys Dent and wing Ryan John.
The plucky Bryncethin teenage tyro's started the second half well and were rewarded with a try out wide for their efforts in the 48th minute. The rest of the second half turned into a game of cat and mouse with the Lawrence Park side in full out attack while Bryncethin had a jam-jar tight defence. With fourteen minutes left on the clock and after another onslaught at the Cherry and Whites line Pontycymer were awarded a penalty try that was the telling factor in the outcome of this vital cup clash. Eye catching displays for Pontycymer came from former Bridgend Ravens prop Ricky Griffiths and centre Gareth Howells.
On Saturday Pontycymer travel to Parc Bedw where they face Birchgrove.
